Plantillas automatizadas Automated templates

Five principles for building After Effects templates that render dozens of versions —across languages, formats and brands— without redoing the work each time.

El problema no es animar, es multiplicar

The problem isn't animating, it's multiplying

When a client needs a single video, the job is to animate it. When they need the same video in three formats, eight locations and four brands, the job changes nature. And deliveries like this sometimes reach hundreds of clips: the hard part is making every change reach every version without any of them falling behind. A human error in just one of those clips is a wrong video that someone publishes.

That's why, in projects like this, animation takes the least time. What matters is how the project is built: what changes, where it changes and how many times it has to be touched. These are the five principles I use as a guide, with real examples from three production projects (eDreams/Opodo, Chafiras and RIA) so you can see how they apply.

Principle 1: every piece of data lives in one place

A price, a text, a brand color or a destination is defined once, and the rest of the project reads it from there. The practical consequence is that changing a brand or a language means changing one thing, not forty, and the margin of human error drops drastically.

In practice: in eDreams, the texts live in the composition of one format and the others read them by expression; brand colors live in a reference composition and every colored layer points to it. In RIA, everything that changes between locations sits in folders marked (EDIT HERE); the rest is not touched.

Principio 2: un master, muchos formatos

Principle 2: one master, many formats

Formats aren't redone, they're derived. The key is expressions that read the width and height of their own composition to place each element. If the size changes, the layout repositions itself, and adapting to a new format means duplicating, adjusting the size and checking, not laying everything out again.

In practice: in Chafiras, each screen, from the narrow verticals to the wide horizontals, uses these expressions to place the frame, the bars and the carousel. In eDreams, the three formats share the same box logic, sized by the real width of the text.

Principio 3: las cajas miden el texto

Principle 3: boxes measure the text

Languages don't measure the same: a word in German can double its English equivalent. If the box behind it is drawn by hand, every language forces a review. The solution is for the box to read the real width of the text (sourceRectAtTime) and add a configurable margin.

In practice: in eDreams, twelve text boxes do this with a single slider for the margin. It's the same idea behind my Autobox asset.

Principio 4: el nombre es el dato

Principle 4: the name is the data

When there are many similar pieces, I prefer that each carries its position or identity in its name instead of managing them with a counter. That way expressions can read the name, and you can tell what each thing is without opening it.

In practice: in Chafiras there are 29 products in a carousel (Rotator_N), and three placeholders for each (image, title and price, eighty-seven in total). In RIA, compositions are named by campaign, format and version (ES_1TRX_Landscape_A), so you know what each render is without opening it.

Principio 5: orden antes que animación

Principle 5: order before animation

Before automating anything, consolidate: remove solids and replace them with shape layers, de-duplicate precompositions, use label colors with a purpose and separate what is edited ((EDIT HERE)) from what isn't ((precomps)). A chaotic master can't be automated: it has to be rebuilt.

In practice: I did it in eDreams and in RIA, and in both cases the order is what made everything else viable.

Antes de automatizar, pregúntate

Before automating, ask yourself

  • Is each piece of data that changes defined in one place?
  • Can I get a new format by duplicating and adjusting the size?
  • Do the boxes adapt to the text of any language?
  • ¿Los nombres dicen qué es cada pieza?
  • Do the names say what each piece is?
  • ¿El master está ordenado antes de empezar?
  • Is the master tidy before I start?

Qué queda cuando termina el proyecto

What's left when the project ends

What's left is a tidy master, with every piece of data in its place. When a client asks for a new batch, the update work is simple and the only thing to watch is render time. I don't claim to have done something that can't be done by hand: I claim to have avoided doing it by hand over and over.
